Glasgow, Thanasis Gavos
The two-day summit of leaders of more than 130 countries in the framework of the United Nations climate conference COP26 in Glasgow ends late in the afternoon.
The leaders, at the initiative of the British hosts, signed the Declaration on Forests and Land Use, which commits about $ 19 billion to end deforestation worldwide by 2030.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson warned during the signing ceremony of the declaration that achieving the goal of curbing global warming to one and a half degrees Celsius is a matter of “life and death”.
The participation of China and Brazil in the agreement is considered important, both due to the vast forest area and due to the accelerated deforestation of recent years, especially in the Amazon rainforest.
The Presidents of Brazil and Russia, among others, sent videotaped messages to the signing ceremony. In total, the declaration is adopted by more than 100 countries, including Greece.
The Forest Agreement fulfills one of the four key objectives of the British Presidency of COP26. As Mr Johnson has repeatedly said, he also wants to commit countries to specific emission reduction targets, increase funding for developing countries for green actions and a shift to electric vehicles.
Government ministers and technical staff, as well as representatives of the private sector, will continue to work until November 12 in Glasgow to reach an agreement on these issues.
