Fires in Greece: Burnt areas increased by 50% – See tables

by

The number of events also increased – What the detailed charts show

There is an increase in the burned areas and the number of forest fires in our country during the first half of the current fire protection season (01.05.2022 – 29.07.2022), as can be seen from the data of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) retrieved by and processed by the FLAME pyrometeorological team of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) / meteo.gr

In particular, and always based on EFFIS, the burned areas in our country up to Friday 29.07.2022 amount to 172,100 acres, showing an increase of about 50% compared to the corresponding average of the period 2006 – 2021 (114,054 acres) (Figure 1). A significant contribution to these negative statistics are the 6 large forest fires that occurred in July in Itea, Ilia, Rethymnon, Penteli, Lesvos and Dadia.

Regarding the number of forest fires, up to Friday 29.07.2022, EFFIS mapped 38 events, with the average for the period 2006 – 2021 being 22 (Figure 2). The increase in the number of forest fires during 2022 corresponds to a rate of approximately 73%. However, of particular concern is the fact that the number of forest fires has increased significantly since the beginning of spring (March 2022), recording values above and beyond the absolute maximum of the period 2006 – 2021.
