This year’s July, the 2nd warmest for Western Greece since 2010

In July this year there were 25 days with strong meltemias, the second highest value after 26 days with strong meltemias in June 2020.

Close to the normal levels for the season, the temperature in July 2022 in most of the mainland and island country, with the exception of Western Greece and the Peloponnese. It’s about him second warmest July for Western Greece since the beginning of systematic records in 2010 and the third warmest month for the Peloponnese.

July this year was also a month with a large number of days with strong winds (meltemia). As a criterion, the limit of 50 km/h was set as the maximum wind gust at the station of the National Observatory of Athens, in Tinos (Town Hall). In July this year there were 25 days with strong spellsthe second highest value after the 26 days of strong melt in June 2020.

The largest positive deviations of the maximum temperature were recorded by the network of 53 meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens in Epirus, the Ionian Islands, Western Sterea Greece and the Peloponnese, while marginally negative deviations were recorded in the Aegean islands due to the breath of strong northerlies, the largest part of the month.

The relatively low temperatures for the season that occurred between July 8-15, did not significantly affect the western parts of the country, but on the contrary, in the northern and eastern parts the maximum temperature fluctuated up to 13 degrees below normal values ​​(Florina).

In Corfu and Pyrgos Ilias, the most days with positive temperature deviations, with 24 of the 31 days of the month being warmer than the 2010-2019 average. On the contrary, in Paros 24 days with negative temperature deviations were recorded, while in Tinos 22 days under the influence of the strong meltium.

In Athens, the temperature fluctuated close to the average of the last 12 years, with 17 of the 31 days of the month recording positive temperature deviations at the EAA weather station in Gazi. In Thessaloniki, most days of the month were slightly cooler than normal, with 17 days of the month recording negative deviations (up to -10.7°C on 9 July).
