A circuit that channeled smuggled and adulterated drinks into Attica, dismantled by S.D.O.E.

After appropriate utilization of information and coordinated operational action of the S.D.O.E., a ring that traded and trafficked in contraband-adulterated alcoholic beverages was dismantled in the region of Attica.

Significant success, in the effort to combat the smuggling of products subject to Excise Tax (Excise Tax), as well as in dealing with financial crime, fraud against the interests of the Greek State and the EU. and in ensuring the health of citizens, it was noted by auditors of the SDOE Operational Directorate. Attica.

After appropriate utilization of information and coordinated operational action, a ring was dismantled that traded and trafficked smuggled-adulterated alcoholic beverages in the region of Attica.

In particular, checks and investigations were carried out on 1/8/2022 in three houses in the center of Athens and in the southern suburbs, which were used for the production, bottling, storage and distribution of contraband-adulterated alcoholic beverages.

In total, the following were located and seized:

700 liters of alcoholic beverage of unknown origin in plastic bottles-containers and stainless tanks.
100 bottles of branded spirits that had been refilled and bottled with spirit of unknown origin.
3,000 fake stickers, bottle caps and valves.
Equipment for bottling and production of alcoholic beverages, stainless steel tanks, pigments and other accessories for bottling adulterated beverages.
3,500 empty bottles of brand-name alcoholic beverages, which were intended to be refilled with adulterated alcoholic beverage and made available to the consuming public.
Two vehicles that were used for the trafficking of contraband-adulterated alcoholic beverages.
Three people (foreigners) who were found in the storage areas were arrested, while criminal proceedings were brought against four people (foreigners) who escaped arrest.

The arrested persons were brought to the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, with the autoforos procedure, for forgery, for violation of the provisions of the Customs and Commercial Code, the provisions of Law 146/1914 “on unfair competition” as well as Law 4251/2014 and Law .3386/2005 on the illegal entry of the foreigner into Greece.

Samples were taken from the above confiscated amount of alcoholic beverages, which have been sent for examination to the Chemical Service. The confiscated quantities of alcoholic beverages were transferred to storage areas for safekeeping.

The Athens Customs Office will determine the applicable duties and other taxes applicable to alcoholic beverages.

The investigation continues, in order to identify the total amount of alcoholic beverages trafficked by those involved, as well as the businesses to which they were distributed.
