“Platonis” is a male bear, aged 4 to 5 years, very healthy, who repeatedly swam across Lake Kastoria to the peninsula of Prophet Ilias.

He returned to Kastoria “Platonis”, the bear who was removed on July 23

“It is a common practice of animals to return again to the environment they had known or lived in for a certain period of time as their habitat”, the director of the Environmental organization “Kallisto”, Spyros Psaroudas, explains to APE BEE, confirming the information about the return of the animal that was removed on July 23 with a special operation of the organization and the Kastoria immediate intervention team. Mr. Psaroudas states that in 90% of the cases when with the stunning method “we remove bears from inhabited to more mountainous areas, the animals usually return to their previous habitat.”

“So it happened with ‘Plato’, we expected it to happen and we monitor him every minute through the signals we receive from the collar we put on.” Mr. Psaroudas informs us that the animal is currently nesting in a riverside area of Aliakmonas a few kilometers outside of Kastoria.

The reaction model in these cases is for the animal to feel that the space it is temporarily in is inhospitable and this is achieved by using special means. Thus, the immediate intervention team that has been set up in the area in which representatives of the forest office, the veterinary service, game wardens and members of the organizations “Kallisto” and “Arktouros” participate, with the use of firecrackers and loud sound signals, constantly harass the animal so that it feels discomfort and to be forced to move to another area.

“Platonis” is a male bear, aged 4 to 5 years, very healthy, who repeatedly swam across Lake Kastoria to the peninsula of Prophet Ilias. The young animal frequently visited the area because it fed on the entrails of “Plato” deer that live fenced off in a certain area. Mr. Psaroudas reported that “the animal breached the fence and fed on some of the deer that were probably sick or already dead.” On the carcasses of the animals, as he emphasizes, “no signs of attack or injury from the bear’s claws were found”.

The scientists of the “Kallisto” group, due to the animal’s special preference for these deer, decided to give the young bear the name “Platonis” which characterizes a large population group of deer that live in large populations mainly in Rhodes. However, as to how the specific deer of the species were found fenced in the Prophet Elias Peninsula in Kastoria, the manager of Callisto declared ignorance. However, he made it clear that electric fences should be installed immediately to prevent the approach of other animals and above all bears. “Even if “Platonis” does not approach the Peninsula again, it is not excluded that in the near future another bear will try the same route to the specific point if he realizes that there is food in the area that the search for does not require special effort” he concluded.
