Municipality of Athens: Every femicide is a setback and a moral defeat for society

by

The Vice-Mayor of Policies for Equality, Combating Discrimination and Gender-Based Violence, in addition to the fact that it condemns, unequivocally and forcefully, any form of gender-based violence, considers that every femicide is a setback and a moral defeat for our society.

The last two femicides within a few hours are a resounding reminder that the nightmare of perpetuating stereotypical behaviors continues to victimize women and plague our society.

Unfortunately, once again, the murders meet the World Health Organization’s definition of femicide, that is, the intentional “homicide of women” precisely because they are women.

The Vice-Mayor of Politics of Equality, Combating Discrimination and Gender-Based Violence, in addition to condemning, unequivocally and forcefully, any form of gender-based violence, considers that every femicide is a heavy loss and at the same time a setback and a moral defeat for the whole our society.

At the same time, she declares herself present in the battle to eliminate stereotypes that reproduce violence and discrimination and stands by all potential victims of violence, reminding that no woman is alone and that all women have power, they have a voice. And in the Municipality of Athens they also have a constant supporter.

The Municipality of Athens actively participates in protection and prevention, but also in building a tangible future of equality for all and towards all.

We provide protection to women victims of gender-based violence through the Hostel for Women Victims of Violence and their Children, which offers safe accommodation, feeding, psychosocial support and care by specialized staff (social worker, psychologist, educator) for women victims of violence to be supported, empowered to get back on their feet – as quickly as possible – and reintegrate into society and the labor market.

In addition, we invest in prevention, correction of wrongdoing, with the Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination, which provides holistic counseling services of psychological, legal, employment support from front-line staff to each and everyone who faces any form and type of violence and/or multiple discrimination.

We invite each and every one not to hesitate to contact the SOS 15900 line, a national service that enables women victims of violence or third parties to contact a gender-based violence agency directly.

We remain with sharpened reflexes and in consultation with all social actors, in order to finally put an end to this despicable pandemic of violence against women.
