Actions to be taken once a fire is detected – Useful tips to avoid causing a fire
The battle of the fire department and the entire state apparatus with the occurrence of fires is a daily one, and in the last 24 hours there were 52 fire fronts throughout the country.
According to the information provided by the Fire Department, most of them were dealt with immediately, at their initial stage, while the local investigative offices, as well as the Divisions of the Arson Crimes Directorate (D.A.E.E.), are investigating the causes of their occurrence.
According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction, a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for tomorrow, Friday, August 5.
The areas predicted to be at a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) are as follows:
- Attica
- South Evia
- Samo,
- Ikaria,
- Chios and
- Fish
According to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection some helpful tips that we can all easily follow, especially in the summer months, so as not to cause a fire is:
- We avoid outdoor hot work that may cause a fire (welding, using a wheel or other tool that throws sparks)
- We do not light outdoor grills (barbeques) during the summer months in the woods, nor in areas where there are dry grasses and branches
- We avoid smoking bees and we do not leave burning residues in the open air, because they may rekindle and cause a fire
- Under no circumstances do we burn dry grass, branches, reeds and rubbish in the open air
- We never throw lighted cigarettes and matches out of the car window, not even when we are in the woods
- We do not leave rubbish in the forest, because there is a risk of it igniting, nor glass bottles, because they may cause a fire in dry grasses, through solar radiation
- We do not use sparklers – fireworks, in areas that are a short distance from forest lands
- We never park our vehicle in places where there is dry grass. The catalytic converter of cars remains superheated for a long time after the engine is turned off, making the risk of starting a fire visible
- We are aware that sparks from the exhausts of all types of vehicles can create conditions conducive to fire
- We always comply with forest access prohibition signs during periods of high risk
The actions we must take as soon as we notice a fire:
- Call the number 199 IMMEDIATELY and give clear information about the location and the exact spot where you are, as well as information about the specific position where you see the fire.
- We describe the type of vegetation that burns
- We determine the direction of the fire
- We inform you about the intensity and direction of the wind in the area
- Calls to this number are free from both landlines and mobile phones. Also, card phones do not require the insertion of a calling card. In case your mobile phone shows “emergency calls” or “out of network” call 112, which is also an emergency number for the entire European Union. Its use is also free, from all landlines and mobile phones.
