The fact that only today the judicial authorities of the city dealt with three similar incidents is indicative.
In the first case, a 37-year-old man was arrested by police officers of AT Lefkos Pyrgos, following a crime brought against him by his permanent partner. The prosecutor prosecuted him for domestic simple bodily harm, for domestic threat and insult. He was then referred to be tried at the Autoforo Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki.
The accused, who stated that he is married to the complainant and that they have a child together, requested three days to prepare his defence. The court adjourned the hearing of the case until tomorrow but kept the husband in custody.
In the second case, a couple sued each other after an incident that took place inside a restaurant where they both worked. Criminal charges were brought against the 38-year-old man for simple domestic bodily harm, for domestic threat and for verbal abuse, while the 22-year-old woman is accused of simple bodily harm and verbal abuse.
In the event book of the Toumpas – Triandrias police station, they were recorded as “permanent partners”, but before the Three-member Motor Vehicle Misdemeanor Court, where they were referred to be tried, they stated the following: The man stated that he was married and that he had a casual relationship with the complainant and his opponent, while the 22-year-old woman said that she left her home to live with the 38-year-old. Both asked for and got adjournments. The court released the woman but kept the man in custody until the trial.
In the third case, the Autonomous Single-Member Misdemeanor Court dealt with an incident of domestic threat. A 49-year-old man was referred to trial for “threat between spouses”. According to the case file filed by AT Neapolis-Sykeon, the 47-year-old wife filed a summons against her husband who, the previous day, went to their house drunk and “began to threaten her and hit various objects, showing off his fist ».
In her testimony, the complainant pointed out that her husband has an alcoholism problem and practices domestic violence. “He hasn’t hit us, that’s the truth. When he drinks, however, there is shouting and disturbance. We have two children, a 21 year old daughter and an 18 year old son. He provokes us to make a fuss,” he said. When asked by the president of the court if they received threats, the 47-year-old added that: “In the department he said ‘if I get arrested you all hide’ but he was under the influence of alcohol.”
In his apology, the accused said that he had nothing more to add than what his wife said and admitted that there is a problem that is difficult to deal with. “I started drinking as a cop” he pointed out and responded positively to the relevant advice of the prosecutor. “I agree to participate in a KETHEA drug addiction program,” he said.
Ultimately the court sentenced him to 7 months in prison which was suspended for three years on the condition that he participate in an alcohol rehabilitation program.
Yesterday, the Autonomous Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki imposed a 28-month prison sentence on a husband because he beat and cursed his wife even when she was pregnant. He was found guilty of domestic violence, verbal abuse and menacing. The court decided to serve 3 months and suspend the rest of the sentence for three years while accepting that the appeal has a suspensive effect on the execution of the sentence.
The defendant was not present at the trial, nor was he represented by an attorney.
