The 15-year-old’s operation was successful, however, according to doctors, the next two 24 hours are considered critical.

It is shocking description of his 20-year-old friend 15-year-old who was injured in Andros from a boat while they were snorkelling.

“The only thought I remember having after we were under the boat was when the propeller would pass over us and we would die, so it was a very scary moment,” said the 20-year-old who saw the speedboat moving towards them.

The young man described to Star how he and his friend escaped at the last minute, while fishing in the Faragi area near the bay of Korthios in Andros.

“We were at a distance of 15-20 meters from the shore and we were fishing. We had our buoy with us, tied to Theodoris, at a distance of 10 meters. And while Theodoris was tying the fish to his body and looking at the bottom I heard the engine of the inflatable and I raised my head and saw an inflatable heading towards us at high speed and it was at a distance of 30 to 40 meters,” said the friend of the 15-year-old.

“I started shouting with all my might and waving my right hand in the air. We were not noticed by the boat operator. He continued to head towards us, he did not change course, nor did he reduce speed, and I directly grabbed Theodore with my left hand, who had not yet realized that a boat was coming towards us. I pulled him with all my strength to my right so we could move away from the scene.”

As he described, the next few minutes were nightmarish as he tried to keep the bleeding Theodoris on the surface of the sea and on the other hand he signaled to the boat operator to help him to take him to land.

“Why did they cut off my hand?”

Thodoris, seriously wounded in the hand, was taken to the island’s Health Center, where he was given first aid and late at night by an Air Force helicopter he was taken to Athens where he underwent surgery at the KAT.

The 15-year-old was in shock, all he managed to say looking at his hand was: “Why did they cut my hand”?

According to the Star, the upper extremity microsurgery doctors at KAT who operated on the 15-year-old consider the next two 24 hours as critical, as although the operation was successful, it takes time for the child’s arm to start bleeding. The impact on the boat’s propeller resulted in injuries to vital organs in the hand.

His friend’s immediate reaction saved his life as he might have hit him in the head. The blows he bears from the propeller are along his left arm.

The 15-year-old told the hospital staff: “I didn’t understand exactly how it happened. Me and my friend were in the sea when suddenly the boat passed over us. My friend reacted and pulled me.”

The 33-year-old operator of the boat was arrested and by oral order of the prosecutor he was released and a regular trial was set.
