Fires: 61 in one 24 hours – The latest data on the fronts in Thassos and Messinia

The battle of the fire department and the entire state apparatus with the occurrence of fires is a daily one, and in the last 24 hours there were 61 fire fronts throughout the country.

According to information from the fire department, most of them were dealt with immediately, in their initial stage.

The fire that broke out last night in a forest area in the area Lefki Thassos is in recession and they operate 185 firefighters with 15 teams of walking departments and 38 vehicles. For aerial fire fighting, a total of 10 aircraft and nine (9) helicopters have been allocated and operate periodically, including one (1) helicopter for aerial coordination. Assistance in the extinguishing work is provided by two (2) helicopters and three (3) project machines of the General Directorate of Fire and Rescue, volunteer firefighters and volunteer groups of Civil Protection, the Thassos Forest Service, as well as water carriers and project machines of the Eastern Region Macedonia & Thrace. An Echelon (CAEE) of investigative officers of the Fire Brigade has been activated in Thassos, while another Echelon of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE) is moving to investigate the causes of the fire.

The fire that broke out today at noon in Messinia is delimited and operate, 40 firefighters with two (2) groups of pedestrian departments, 13 vehicles, while two (2) aircraft and two (2) helicopters operated from the air. Assistance is provided by volunteer firefighters and volunteer Civil Protection groups, the forest management P.E. of Messinia, as well as water carriers and machinery of the Local Government project.

We remind you that, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr), for tomorrow, Friday, August 12, 2022, a high risk of fire (risk category 3) is predicted for the following areas:

  • Region of Attica,
  • Region of Central Greece (Central & Southern Evia and areas of Boeotia)
  • Region of Crete (Rethymno, Heraklion, Lasithi)
  • South Aegean Region (Dodecanese)
  • North Aegean Region (Lesvos, Chios, Samos Ikaria)

An appeal is addressed to our fellow citizens:

  • Be especially careful and avoid any activity that could cause a fire.
  • To monitor forest fire prevention information available on the website and official accounts of the Fire Service, Facebook and Twitter.
  • In the event that they notice a fire, they should immediately notify the Fire Service by dialing 199.
  • For more information and self-protection instructions from the dangers of forest fires, citizens can visit the website of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection at www.civilprotection.gr

Finally, the fire department asks all citizens to be especially careful and in the event of a fire, for their own safety, to faithfully follow the instructions of the competent authorities.
