“The political system of our country and the Parliament must defend the constitutional freedoms of citizens, human rights and the constitutional right of religious freedom” notes PASOK
Fire against the deputy speaker of the Parliament, Charalambos Athanasiouwas launched by PASOK’s Committee after Mr. Athanasiou’s statements on the Parliament channel about the feasibility of monitoring Muslim MPs.
“Unbelievable and yet true. This Government has set out to send the country into a tailspin, in terms of respect for institutions and human rights. This time, with the unacceptable public position-statement of the vice-president of the Parliament, Charalambos Athanasiou, who is reviving the theory of the “internal enemy” in the face of the Greek Muslim MPs. This statement plunges the country into intolerance and creates a serious rift, at the national level, as it shows the minority MP as potentially capable and in any case suspect acts of extreme treason and national humiliation, therefore reasonably monitored by the secret services” it is emphasized.
“Words are unnecessary. The political system of our country and the Parliament must defend the constitutional liberties of citizens, human rights and the constitutional right of religious freedom. We request the immediate intervention of the Speaker of the Parliament, the explicit condemnation of the unacceptable, divisive statement of Mr. Athanasios and his referral to the competent bodies of the Parliament and the Ethics Committee,” the announcement concludes.
