Fire in Thassos: Firefighters fight the flames – 40 fires in the last 24 hours

The fire brigade and dozens of volunteers have focused up to this time on stopping the fire so that it does not spread to Skala Potamias and Theologos.

Firefighting planes and helicopters have been continuously dropping water since early in the morning, while there are no strong winds in the area, so the work of the firefighting forces becomes easier. However, all involved are working to bring the fire under control before sunset, when aerial operations will cease.

The fact is, however, that residents and visitors of the island’s settlements that are near the fronts of the fire spent another night of agony. The forces of the fire brigade and the dozens of volunteers have focused until now on stopping the fire so that it does not spread to Skala Potamias and Theologos, as the flames reached the position “Ai Lia” after it rekindled.

The situation was suffocating in Theologos due to the smoke, with many residents going down to the beach front, while at dawn the church bells rang in Potamia and Theologos, in order to call those who could help in the firefighting work.

However, apart from the forest area that has been burned so far, it is sad that the only fir trees that existed in Thassos were burned after the rekindling of the fire. A small forest that was in a difficult place has now been erased from the “map” of the flora of the island.

Forty forest fires occurred in the last 24 hours, from 18:00 yesterday, 12-08-2022 to 18:00 today, 13-08-2022, according to the latest update from the Fire Brigade Headquarters.

Most were treated immediately, at their initial stage.

The fire that broke out in an agroforestry area in the area of ​​Ag. Vassiliou in the Municipality of Viannos, Heraklion, Crete is demarcated and 40 firefighters with 3 groups of pedestrian sections and 14 vehicles are operating, while 2 helicopters participated in the aerial firefighting.

The local investigative offices, as well as units of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (DAEE) are investigating the causes of the fires.

It is noted that also tomorrow Sunday, August 14according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map, issued by EMY, high risk (category 3)will have Dual Attica and Piraeus, including the islands of Argosaronicus and Kythera, Corinthia, Laconia the islands of the Southeast Aegean, Chania and Rethymnon.
