A rare Asproparis vulture made its last migratory journey this year, which was spotted and collected by Nikos and Dimitris Loutsigas seven nautical miles south of Thassos, as part of their search with their boat “Little North”, following a relevant call from the Hellenic Ornithological Society.

He had already migrated twice successfully to Africa and returned again to the Balkans. “Unfortunately, this year’s migration trip was supposed to be the last,” the Hellenic Ornithological Society said via social networking sites.

“The unfortunate vulture didn’t make it, but at least we will be able to investigate what happened, since while for young white-tailed eagles drowning at sea – due to exhaustion – is an important cause of mortality, for adult birds it is not as expected, especially in the case of the particular bird that was still so close to the shores”, added the Hellenic Ornithological Society.
