Gradual rise in temperature to high levels for the season.
One heat wave expected in Greece this week, which will last enough daysaccording to the latest prognostic data of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr.
In particular, the atmospheric circulation over Europe will favor the prevalence of warm gas masses in a large part of the European continent and also in Greece, resulting in a gradual rise in temperature to high levels for the season. The peak of the warm convection is estimated during the two days of Friday 19/8 – Saturday 20/8, when the temperature is quite likely to reach 41-42 degrees Celsius in places.
At the same time, based on the latest available forecast data analyzed by the FLAME pyrometeorological team of EAA / meteo.gr, the flammability of dead forest fuels is expected to show significant growth during the same period. The reason for this increase is the gradual increase in temperature combined with the prevalence of dry conditions.
Under these conditions, dead forest fuels, especially the finer ones such as leaves, needles, small branches and logs, release moisture into the atmosphere and dry out quickly. This has the effect of facilitating ignition, if there is a source of heat, and then sustaining combustion and the rapid transmission (spread) of the fire.
In particular, the forecast of the moisture content of dead forest fuels for Wednesday 17/8 is that it is expected to fall below 10% in the largest part of the country. These values create a favorable background for the occurrence and spread of forest fires.
