Vozeberg’s urgent question to the Commission on the increase in immigration pressure in Greece

by

The ND MEP noted, among other things, that “a new attempt to use the immigrant-refugee as a tool has been attempted in recent days by Turkey at the expense of Greece”

An urgent question to the Commission “on the occasion of the new attempt to use immigration as a tool that has been attempted in recent days by Turkey at the expense of Greece and the EU”, submitted the MEP of the ND and the EPP and a member of the Committee on Political Liberties, Justice and Internal Affairs, Eliza Vozeberg-Vryonidis, as stated in the relevant announcement.

Specifically, Mrs. Vozeberg, in her question, after noting that “a new attempt to instrumentalize the immigrant-refugee has been attempted in recent days by the Turkey at the expense of Greece and the EU, with coordinated actions of mass migration of migrants both at the land borders in the Evros and in the wider maritime area of the Aegean”, specifically mentions that “the Greek authorities have recorded an increase in migratory pressure at the same time at the land and sea borders , with the most recent incident being the disembarking of 170 migrants in Kythira from two boats that arrived on the island on August 17 with a difference of a few hours” and that “in Evros, respectively, 38 desperate people were identified and rescued by the Greek authorities in the previous days, among including a pregnant woman and a minor child, who had been taken there by force from the Turkish side and had been pushed into Greek territory”.

For these reasons and “given that in this way Turkey seeks to promote its dangerous geopolitical ambitions at the same time, possibly creating a border issue”, as stated, Mrs. Vosenberg asks the European Commission “how it evaluates the above incidents” and if “it is going to react immediately and in what way, in order to prevent further escalation by Turkey”.
