The request of 17-year-old 17-year-old Dimitris Koufontina to be released was rejected once again as the judicial council (Council of Criminal Courts of Lamia) rejected his request, judging at the same time something even more important. The time he can henceforth request release from prison.

According to the judicial council that adopted a relevant proposal of the prosecutor, Dimitris Koufontinas can submit a request for release from prison again in 2027, in six years, when he will have completed 25 years in prison.

The Judicial Council ruled that the multi-lifer should remain in prison for at least 25 years, as it ruled that in his case no more lenient provisions that applied before the passage of the Penal Code under the SYRIZA government, which allowed lifers to ask to leave prison, just 19 years inside. According to the judicial council, these most lenient provisions apply to lifers and not to multi-lifers such as Dimitris Koufontinas.

Following the verdict of the judicial council, Koufontinas will have to wait until 2027 to submit a new request for release from prison
