The timeless commitment of Marina Flisvos to the protection of the environment is an integral part of its business practices and is reflected in the innovative sustainable development actions it implements.
In an effort to limit the impact of its activities on the environment, Marina Flisvos started, in July 2020, to operate an outdoor composting unit, aiming to process the green waste of its park, as well as coffee grounds from the shops operating in the area her.
This is an initiative that is part of the solid waste management plan of Marina Flisvos and proves in practice that sustainable development is its strategic priority and an integral part of its values and activities.
THE composting is a simple natural process of decomposition which turns organic residues into a rich organic mixture that improves the soil and can act as a high quality fertilizer with significant soil improvement abilities. The term that has prevailed to call this mixture is compost or soil improver.
In the case of Marina Flisvos, the compost takes about 4 months to turn into organic fertilizer. Trained marina personnel then record the quantities and apply the product to the plants in the park, while keeping a photographic record to determine the improvement of the plants after application. So far, about 10.5 tons of compost have been produced in the composting plant.
This particular process is a very good circular economy practice since the organic fertilizer produced is re-injected into the park, providing high quality soil improvement properties.
Recognizing the importance of environmental education and believing in the inestimable value of shaping environmentally responsible and active citizens, Marina Flisvou carried out school tours of Palaio Faliros and Alimos in the area of its outdoor composting unit, during the month of June, 2022, for the thorough information and awareness of students regarding good waste management practices.
Her long-term goal Marina Flisvos is to reinforce the message of environmental protection by hosting even more schools. The aim is to inform the students about the operation of the unit, to raise awareness regarding environmental issues and the gradual cultivation of environmental consciousness.
Improving the footprint on the economy, society and the environment is a long-term bet for the Flisvos Marina. It is a gamble that she wins day after day, year after year, while each success is not a cause for complacency but a source of encouragement to conquer her next higher goals.
