The MP of Heraklion of SYRIZA, Nikos Igoumenidis, gives his own position on what unfolded in the traffic control by the BOAK Traffic Division, responding to the complaints of the Union of Police Officers of Chania.
ELAS confirms the traffic violation of a member of parliament in Crete, but without naming him and referring to the complaints of the Union of Police Officers of the Prefecture of Chania that threatened to transfer police officers when his license plates were removed on the Northern Road Axis (BOAK).
Sources of the Ministry of Citizen Protection said earlier that: “the law applies to everyone and no one is exempt from it. It has been requested to investigate all the complaints of the EL.AS trade unionists. for the threats they report receiving.”
The announcement of the Union of Police Officers of Chania
The Union of Police Officers of Chania, taking a position on the issue, issued the following statement:
“On 20/08/2022 our colleagues from T.T. B.O.A.K. (Chania level) they did the “crime” and stopped a parliamentary vehicle in the area of Koiliaris, specifically at 18.5 km NE. Chania – Rethymno which he acted on repeated overtaking to the point where it was not only prohibited, but also endangered the lives of other car drivers and road users.
“Our colleagues proceeded with the LEGAL actions, imposing the relevant fine and removing the signs. During the audit, the elected member of the Greek Parliament, not only did not accept the fine as it was due, but reminding other times WHICH HAVE PASSED IRREVERSIBLY he started threatening our colleagues.
“Indeed, even the Commander of the Service, A/B XANTHOUDAKIS Nikolaos, received a phone call about the incident in question and both he and the police officers of his Service were threatened by permutation.
“So instead of the Physical and Political Leadership congratulating the police officers for the professionalism they demonstrated and for acting without any discrimination, we are getting to the point where they are being threatened with transfer. At a time when the prevention of traffic accidents is a key objective of the authorities for our island, which suffers a lot from this point of view, the attempt by some to undermine this effort under the guise of threats is beyond all reason.
“We will continue to serve the citizen and fight every day for what is most important, namely his safety. We are tired of so many deaths on this cursed road and we hope some will realize that death makes no exceptions. Then and only then maybe a better tomorrow will dawn for road safety on our island”.

What does the MP answer?
The MP for Heraklion of SYRIZA, Nikos Igoumenidis, gives his own position on what unfolded during the traffic control by the BOAK Traffic Division:
“I was surprised to read the Press Release of August 21, 2022, of the Union of Police Officers of the Prefecture of Chania.
“Dear gentlemen, you are referring to me. On August 20, 2022, as I was driving towards Chania, I was stopped by a police car. As soon as he approached me, the policeman asked for my driver’s license, driver’s license, ID and security. I gave them the documents and among them the vehicle registration license in photocopy. They told me they don’t recognize the photocopy and want the original. Then I mentioned to them that the car is a parliamentary car and these are the documents that have been granted to me as legalization documents for the car by the Hellenic Parliament.
“Then one officer walked away, called someone on the phone and spoke, turned around and started filling out a call. Until that moment I didn’t know why I was stopped. He completed the summons and asked me to sign it. He mentioned that I pressed a double separator line and that I did not bring the vehicle’s license with me. I asked him to fill in that I showed a photocopy of the license and he refused. As soon as I signed the summons the second officer went ahead and removed the vehicle’s plates while the first officer kept the driver’s license. I asked him why he was removing the plates and he replied because of the fact that I did not bring the vehicle registration. I submitted my objections, telling him that they can directly verify the truth of what I said about the vehicle from the system, but I realized that it was their attitude predetermined from the moment they were informed of my status and spoke on the phone. So I left for my destination.
“After that I didn’t see the police again, nor did I talk to them again. Of course, I do not know Mr. Xanthoudakis, nor have I ever had a conversation with him.
“What I saw in the press release of the Police Union today caused me on the one hand surprise and on the other hand anger.
“Anger at the fact that the Police Officers Union decided today to engage with me by distorting facts and situations and claiming false events that never took place. If I, as a member of parliament, received such treatment from the Police, each of the citizens who will read this can easily verify the truth of the daily complaints against the Police for arbitrariness and violence against citizens.
Three questions:
1. How did you find out what you mention in your bulletin? Is it a newsworthy event? What else is there that I am unaware of and you as absentees know, that necessitated your announcement?
2. Really, what is the position of your today’s popular union on the parastatal surveillance that are plaguing the country or perhaps for you they have not passed irretrievably?
3. From the Left, there was a struggle to put an end to the period when the party leaders of the right extorted and threatened the Greek citizens with unfavorable transfers.
Having his personal experience my father and the personal persecution he suffered for his beliefs it does not suit my ethos, my ethics or my culture as a leftist to threaten transfers and do what you impute to me.
“This is the truth and I am stating it for the people who know me, know my morals and my dignity, and not in response to the abominations of your Union Press Release.”
