Virgil Abloh: The MAYBACH project with Mercedes-Benz behind the cameras

In 2020, o Virgil Abloh and the Mercedes-Benz launched a long-term partnership that the German automaker described as a collaboration that expands the boundaries of design. After collaborating on Project Geländewagen inspired by the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, they moved on to Project MAYBACH. Last time, the car industry paid tribute to the late designer with the presentation of the S-Class – limited pieces – and a capsule collection, inspired by the specific project. A few days ago, he released a short documentary that takes the viewer behind the scenes of Project MAYBACH; from the first creation of the Mercedes-Maybach to Abloh’s involvement in the process.

In the Mercedes-Benz documentary, Virgil Abloh says that the basis of the logic was to use two words to lead the driver into a new activity: “‘Practicality’ and ‘luxury’ are not usually used in the same sentence, and the car that we develop can work just like that.” Mercedes-Benz Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener steps in and says how great it is when two people with different creative approaches and backgrounds come together. He explains that Abloh comes from the fields of fashion and art and therefore has a natural wealth of knowledge about and about them while he himself comes from a different industry and has different perspectives. He states that he finds it very interesting that they combine their ideas.

From the initial concept to the luxury car, the documentary takes the viewer through the twists and turns that Abloh and Wagener shared to bring the project to fruition. It offers an overview of the creation process, reminiscent of Virgil Abloh’s approach to fashion as his styles and techniques emerge. “This is what I do in fashion. You do a color you really like and then you have to do five more. You must offer the bag in five colors. We could do a combination with orange, move the colors completely, and then you do something that’s more of a shade of gray,” says Abloh.
