Mentors, in-school coordinators and educational groups are introduced in public schools

Institutions whose purpose – as stated in the relevant announcement – is the modernization, autonomy and strengthening of the school unit, is being introduced into public education by the Ministry of Education starting this year.

Specifically:

1. Educational groups

Principals of Primary and Secondary Education schools can set up educational groups, after the end of the daily teaching program schedule or during the teaching hours of the full-day program.

Clubs can offer objects and activities such as creative employment, free expression and entertainment with objects related to, among others, sports, team sports, traditional or modern dances, choreographic expression, visual arts, crafts and constructions, learning musical instruments, educational robotics, traditional games, science constructions – experiments, math games, rhetoric and creative writing, safe and creative internet, intercultural education, citizenship and civility, volunteering, children’s entrepreneurship, creating a newspaper.

They can, in addition, be active in the organization of cultural events, social-experiential and environmental actions, the formation of a choir, a theater group and a student orchestra.

The themes of the groups are proposed at the beginning of the school year and no later than September 25, their operation begins on October 15 and ends two weeks before the end of the lessons. They can be offered to students of one or more classes and each student can participate in one or two groups, with systematic monitoring, preparation of assignments or other work and receives a certificate of successful participation.

2. Educational Consultant – Mentor

In kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools, the institution of the Pedagogical Advisor – Mentor is introduced. His role is to inspire, orient and support every newly appointed or newly appointed permanent or substitute or hourly teacher, with up to five years of experience, with the aim of improving the quality of his teaching and in general the educational work provided by him . The Educational Consultant – Mentor contributes to the promotion of the trainee’s professional skills and problem solving, directs, informs, explains, advises, advises, exhorts and encourages his new colleague, in direct collaboration with the Education Consultant.

3. Appointment of In-School Coordinator

The Intra-school Coordinators (Class Coordinators or Cognitive Area Coordinators) are bodies for coordinating the educational work at the level of a Primary and Secondary Education school unit, who coordinate and support the teachers in their work, as well as the efforts of the Management of each school unit to strengthen it as professional learning and development community. Administratively they are under the supervision of the Directorate of the school unit and pedagogically they are in direct communication and cooperation with the Education Consultant of pedagogical and scientific responsibility, depending on the nature of the issues that arise and become competently the subject of their work. In addition, they assist the Principal and Deputy Principal of the school unit in their work, within the framework of their responsibilities.

It is recalled that from this school year, the full-day school will be extended from 4 to 5.30 in the afternoon, while the educational staff will be strengthened with 8,500 appointments. “Innovations that were universally introduced already last year, such as English in kindergarten, skills workshops, double standards and experimental schools, EPAL standards, etc., the school acquires new dynamics, becomes more modern and autonomous, gives more stimuli to students and incentives to teachers and executives, it is a cooperative cell of knowledge and skills for everyone” is pointed out in a ministry announcement.
