In 2017 he was honored by the Hellenic Cardiology Society for his work.
Sadness in the medical world for the death of Yiannis Nana, professor emeritus of Cardiology at the School of Medicine of EKPA. The professor died in a car accident.
The Board of Directors of the Society for the Study and Research of Heart Failure (EMEKA), of which he was president 2007-2011, expresses its deepest sadness for the professor’s untimely death. “A left-wing servant of medical science left his mark, like few others, on the country’s cardiology”, states EMEKA.
Who was Yannis Nanas?
Dr. Ioannis Nanas was Emeritus Professor of Cardiology at the School of Medicine of EKPA and President of the company KARDIATEC AE, which aims to develop the PULVAD left ventricular assist device for patients with end-stage heart failure.
At the urging of his mentor Prof. S. Moulopoulos, he retrained at the University of Utah in the Department of Artificial Organs under Prof. Mr. William Kolff. There he gained great experience in the operation of the artificial heart by developing important experimental work. In 1986, he returned to the Therapeutic Clinic of GPNA “Alexandra” where he continued the clinical work and where he organized the first heart failure clinic.
In the early 1990s, the transplant program began in Greece while introducing primary angioplasty, mechanical circulatory support and many more innovative clinical procedures, reports EMEKA. During the same period he undertook the implantation of the PULVAD left ventricular assist device in patients and has since worked to promote the first artificial heart in Greece, a device entirely of his own invention to treat patients with heart failure. At the same time, he developed an important didactic and experimental work (>14,000 references and >300 full theses) at the School of Medicine of EKPA, training a large number of renowned Greek cardiologists.
In 2017 he was honored by the Hellenic Cardiology Society for his work in Greece.
He was the founder of the KEDAS Association (Center for International Solidarity and Cooperation “Saints Cosmas and Damian”) with charity work in Sub-Saharan Africa, specifically in Uganda and Tanzania where 2 hospitals, schools and small rural clinics were built.
President of the Heart Failure Study and Research Society 2007-2011.
“Dignified, with unparalleled morals, a model of life, he leaves us an important spiritual legacy. His imprint will remain indelible in the hearts of all of us”, concludes the EMEKA announcement.
