New in the News: Mongabay News Platform Offers $3,000 to Interested Covering the Environment

North American news platform Mongabay is accepting applications for its environmental journalism program. Applications can be made until September 10, the program is open to professionals and those interested in environmental journalism, and the organization specializes in covering scientific topics related to climate and nature.

The environmental journalism scholarship offered does not require a minimum education, but one of the requirements is that the applicant resides in a tropical country. The objective of the program is to train media professionals and individuals interested in disseminating information about the environment in order to expand coverage on the topic.

The initiative has existed since 2008, with participants in the communication area of ​​scientific institutions, NGOs and within Mongabay itself, a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific topics. Those selected will receive training and mentoring to develop their skills in environmental reporting.

Each fellow will receive US$ 500 monthly during the six months of the program, the total amount of the scholarship must reach R$ 15,000 depending on the dollar exchange rate, and they must produce a report per month to be published on the Mongabay website. All work will be remote. In all, 12 scholarships are offered, six linked to the global English office and six linked to the Spanish office, Mongabay-Latam.

Registration is free and must be done online on the Mongabay website. Applicants can choose the language, English or Spanish, and must fill out a form with contact information, answer questions about their interest in the program, attach a CV, a cover letter with proof of experience in journalism or writing texts and prove the ability to work remotely.

An internal team of the organization will be responsible for the selection. Successful applicants will be notified three weeks prior to the start of the program.
