The Ministry of Education has introduced digital tools into classrooms, such as interactive whiteboards, robotics kits and digital learning materials, which aim to further develop a high-quality digital education ecosystem and which will begin to be installed during this school year.
The time is counting down for the first… school bell, which will ring on Monday, September 12.
In fact, as the Ministry of Education states in its announcement, this school year begins with important innovations:
a) almost 8,600 new, permanent appointments in Primary, Secondary, Special Education and Education: “In total, we implemented 25,000 permanent appointments within 2 years. Notably, in the last 12 years in education, not a single permanent appointment had been made”, he points out.
b) Full day extension:
– Extends in time from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.aiming on the one hand to upgrade the free public education provided, on the other hand to support working parents and families, with the approximation of school and work hours.
– The content is upgraded, with a new educational program, with more creative activities for children (creative writing, visual art, etc.) with more benefits than free public education.
– The application starts in 50% of the departments that are currently operating as full-day, kindergartens and elementary schools (about 5,000).
– No registration criteria.
– Over 3,200 teacher recruitments for its further staffing.
c) Digital tools in classrooms – interactive boards, robotics sets, digital educational materials, which aim to further developing a digital education ecosystem of high standards and which will begin to be installed during this school year.
d) Educational groups: after the end of the daily teaching schedule or during the teaching hours of the full-day program, with subjects and activities such as creative work, sports, team sports, traditional/modern dances, choreographic expression, visual arts, crafts and constructions, learning musical instruments, educational robotics, scientific constructions – experiments.
e) Educational Consultant – Mentor: his role is to inspire, orient and support every newly appointed or newly appointed teacher in the school unit, with up to five years of experience, with the aim of improving the quality of his teaching and in general the educational work provided by him.
F) Intra-school Coordinator: coordinates and supports the teachers in their work, as well as the efforts of the Directorate of each school unit to strengthen it as a professional community of learning and development.
At the same time, the following reforms have been implemented:
- Kindergarten from the age of 4: the two-year compulsory preschool education is implemented throughout the country.
- English in Kindergarten: through creative experiential activities, every child is given the opportunity to expand their linguistic resources from a very early age.
- Skills Workshops (road safety, robotics change, climate change, sex education, entrepreneurship, volunteering, etc.): new topics in the compulsory timetable of all Kindergartens, Primary and High Schools, with the aim of strengthening the transversal skills and basic abilities of students .
- Horizontal teacher trainings: more than 125,000 trainings, which are an investment in the human resources of education.
- 166 New Curricula: we are continuing in the 2022-2023 school year the pilot application of NPS in Standard and Experimental schools of the country.
- Doubling of Model and Experimental schools: from 62 to 120, within 3 years, for quality public free education and diffusion of good practices throughout the education system.
- Establishment of Model Vocational High Schools for the first time, with increased demand from candidates with high scholastic achievements. This year, 24 EPAL Standards will operate throughout the country.
- Evaluation in schools: we continue the School Unit self-evaluation and the evaluation of the educational project and the diagnostic tests “PISA” to evaluate our education system, we start the evaluation of teachers as a feedback process with the aim of improving the education provided.
- Digital transformation in education: a real digital leap, in education, processes and actions.
- Subject Bank in A, B & C of Lyceum: objective assessment of students, which ensures reliability, validity and limitation of inequalities and at the same time ensures coverage of the material throughout the country.
- Reinforcement teaching of Special Nationally Examined Courses (Free Drawing, Line Drawing, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Harmony, Listening Ability, Music Perception/Knowledge): the purpose is to support and prepare candidates to participate in the nationwide examined special courses that have choose. All of these subjects were not previously taught in public schools.
- Strengthening the autonomy of school units: Greater freedom in the organization of teaching, strengthening the role of the Director and Teachers in positions of responsibility, establishing a framework of increased transparency and accountability.
About 6,000 permanent special education teachers were appointed for an inclusive education, the first permanent appointments in EAE through ASEP in the history of the country, and new digital educational material was created for students with disabilities.
Finally, almost all refugee students joined the Greek educational community (for the first time in a record percentage of around 95%) with the establishment of Reception and DYEP departments, simultaneously hiring and training teachers for our refugee students, through a targeted inclusive process.
