The son of the elderly man had made a complaint to the Ministry of Health, in which he stated that during his hospitalization on 8/26, his father got up from his bed to wear something because he was cold and when he returned, two nurses placed bars on his bed and for no reason, they tied his hands with gauze.
A 98-year-old patient was tied up to prevent a falls – father of the journalist Nikos Aslanidis – who was admitted on August 25 through the Emergency Department at the Urology Clinic “Papageorgiou” due to hematuria, with a history of prostate Ca and anticoagulation due to atrial fibrillationsays a statement from the Hospital.
The journalist had proceeded to complaint to the Ministry of Health but also through social media in which he mentioned that his father during his hospitalization on 8/26 got up from his bed to wear something because he was cold and when he returned two nurses placed bars on his bed and, for no reason, tied his hands with gauze. “In vain he asked why they were tying him up. They didn’t give him any answer but using force they tried to tie him to the bars… Although he is 98 years old he tried to react and pushed a nurse with his right hand, but she started hitting him on the arm causing bruises that are still visible . After that he “surrendered” and was tied up…said Mr. Aslanidis.
In the announcement of the “Papageorgiou” hospital, it is stated that the patient was particularly anxious in the afternoon on 26-08-2022 and after being evaluated by a psychiatrist, he was treated due to his diagnosis of organic psychosis. “To prevent a possible fall, due to the repeated attempts to get up from the bed, as is usual in cases of psychomotorically anxious patients and always after medical instruction a) the usual railing was placed in order to prevent it from falling and b) due to the strongly repeated attempt to remove the catheters from him, his upper limbs were restrained with non-traumatic straps in order to avoid his self-injury” is noted in Papageorgiou’s announcement. The Hospital’s explanation for the bruises is that “they are due to the taking of anticoagulant drugs and the violent patient removal of peripheral venous catheters and not in violence».

The patient A. G., aged 98, was admitted on 08-25-2022 at 22:30 pm, to the Urology Clinic, through the Emergency Department, due to hematuria, with a history of Ca prostate and receiving anticoagulant treatment due to vaginal fibrillation. To treat hematuria, continuous bladder lavages were instituted, through a 22 fr triple Foley catheter. For patients with continuous bladder washings, the Hospital’s standard policy is to dress them in a hospital gown, both to preserve their dignity and to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the urinary catheter. Due to the hyponatremia, which is laboratory confirmed, the old age and the change of environment, the patient was particularly anxious in the afternoon on 26-08-2022 and after being evaluated by a psychiatrist, he was treated due to his diagnosis of organic psychosis. To prevent a possible fall, due to the repeated attempts to get up from the bed, as is usual in cases of psychomotorically anxious patients and always after medical instruction a) the usual railing was placed in order to prevent it from falling and b) due to the strongly repeated attempt to remove the catheters from him, his upper limbs were restrained with non-traumatic straps to avoid self-injury. The bruises reported are due to the administration of anti-coagulants and the patient’s own forcible removal of the peripheral venous catheters, rather than violence as reported.
The Medical Service in collaboration with the Nursing Service with respect to hospitalized patients have created a protocol for the effective management of patients with organic psychosis, and the Hospital staff makes every day the maximum efforts to take effective de-escalation measures and the optimal provision of increased care services always aiming at the non-infringement of the patient’s personality.
