by

Lexus has unveiled a new prototype model that utilizes hydrogen to move. This is the ROV Concept (Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle), a zero-emission hydrogen vehicle of hazardous pollutants, which was designed to meet the difficulties of off-road.

It reflects the commitment of the luxury Japanese brand to ensure that driving can coexist with a carbon-free society with a focus on responsible mobility, the official statement said.

The design team of the company developed a vehicle that has the elements of construction which have as their mission the traffic on difficult roads. The car has all the characteristics of an off-road vehicle, such as the exposed suspension, the protective cage and the bulky off-road tires suitable for driving on muddy roads. Its dimensions are length 3,120 mm, width 1,725 mm and height 1,800 mm.

The design team presented a study that protects the occupants, provides a long path for the front suspension and incorporates the brand’s iconic grille. In addition, the front wings are designed to offer protection from rocks and mud. The suspension cover, connected to the rear hydrogen fuel tank, protects the functional parts of the car.

Inside, the study from the Tazuna concept was utilized. A special instrument provides the information the driver needs to move safely on inhospitable terrain and helps to guide the driver in driving.

The new concept has excellent build quality and the sense of luxury of Lexus both inside and outside, it is pointed out in the announcement.

Luxurious details include a leather steering wheel, an original design of the gear lever end and seats with suspension to reduce off-road passenger stress. The seats are also upholstered in durable synthetic leather. For demanding off-road driving, the first Lexus hydrogen ICE will meet all the automotive requirements for QDR (Quiet, Durable, Reliable).

The hydrogen engine 1.0 works just like a gasoline engine. It is powered by hydrogen from a high pressure reservoir. Lexus’ new hydrogen engine emits almost zero emissions, with a negligible amount of engine oil burning while driving.

Spyros Fotinos, head of Lexus Europe, comments: “The Lexus ROV is our response to the growing passion for the countryside and the adventurous spirit of luxury consumers. As an idea, it combines our desire to also develop lifestyle-oriented products with our ongoing research into new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. “Apart from offering an idea that is exciting to drive, it has almost zero emissions thanks to the hydrogen engine.”
