Efthymis Lekkas, Mayor of Eastern Samos, is wary of the development of the phenomenon: “There are no reports of damage”
Intense seismic activity observed today at Samoas two strong earthquakes occurred 4.7 and 5.2 Richter respectively.
THE first earthquakemagnitude 4.7, which occurred at 1:56 p.m., had a focal depth of 10 km and its epicenter was located 14 km south southwest of Pythagorion.
THE secondmagnitude 5.3, occurred almost 15 minutes later, 16 km northwest of Agathonisi.
Speaking to SKAI and the show “Mismatches”, the president of the OASP, Efthymis Lekkas appeared cautious, noting that there is a “complex sequence”.
“The second earthquake was not an aftershock as it registered more Richter magnitudes,” he said characteristically.
As he said, he has already contacted the mayor of Eastern Samos and instructions were given for the municipal officials to carry out checks.
At the same time, Mr. Lekkas clarified that the two new earthquakes are not connected to the earthquakes that “shook” the island 2 years ago, causing great destruction.
He called on people to avoid old structures and follow earthquake protection measures.
For his part, the mayor of Eastern Samos, George Stanzosstated to that until this moment no reports of damage, while crews from the municipality have gone out for checks.
The residents, as he said, are on the road, but they are keeping calm and the tremor was more felt in the south of the island.
It is noted that after the two strong earthquakes, they occurred on the island three aftershocks, of magnitude 2.8, 3 and 3.2 respectively.
