Five new cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children were recorded against in the month of August in Greece, according to EODY.
All children aged 2 to 16 years were hospitalized, their clinical laboratory findings improved immediately without specific treatment and they came out in excellent condition. In two children, herpesvirus 7 was isolated in the blood, in one, herpesvirus 6, in one, enterovirus in the blood and feces, and in one child no infectious agent was isolated.
To date they have been recorded in our country 19 incidents which meet the criteria of a “probable case” of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children, according to the definition of the World Health Organization.
According to EODY, following the announcement in early April of the increase in cases of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children from Great Britain, similar cases have been reported in many countries around the world. However, the total number of cases worldwide is extremely small (about 1000) and in recent weeks the declaration of new cases has decreased significantly. The etiology and pathogenic mechanisms of the disease are still under investigation. A possible association with adenovirus infection has been identified, but other hypotheses and potential co-factors are under consideration. Most cases continue to be reported as sporadic, with no epidemiological correlation between them.
