Kostas Skrekas to SKAI on the energy crisis: All measures are on the table depending on the developments

by

When asked if the support will continue throughout the next period, he answered positively, saying: “We have drawn up scenarios for support for the entire next period when this largely exogenous energy crisis will continue.”

This year we will have a difficult winter, commented the Minister of Energy, Kostas Skrekas, speaking on SKAI television.

“You see” he added “that the Russia is blackmailingreduces natural gas flows to Europe, every announcement by Gazprom that it will turn off the taps sends prices soaring on international markets and this in turn drags down electricity prices

“We had pointed this out in time, the Greek prime minister had warned, he had advanced seven months ago with a proposal to put a ceiling on natural gas prices.

Now we slowly see one after another the European leaders come and agree with the proposal of the Greek prime minister

This morning I sent 26 letters to my 26 counterparts where I describe the Greek proposal for a mechanism to recover excess revenues from the electricity companies that we have been implementing in Greece for two months with very significant results. We have recovered for August almost 900 million euros from the electricity companies and we have led the energy transition fund to subsidize the bills of the Greeks

I also outline our proposal for a new European mechanism, permanent, to decouple the price of electricity from the price of natural gas which would make electricity significantly cheaper.

With the new mechanism for recovering excess revenues from the power generation companies, the energy transition fund and the contribution of the budget, we are given the opportunity to continue supporting Greek households for as long as this energy crisis lasts,” stressed the Minister of Energy.

Support throughout the next period

When asked if the support will continue throughout the next period, he answered positively, saying: “We have drawn up scenarios for support for the entire next period when this largely exogenous energy crisis will continue.”

However, he added that the budget limits are finite, but the government will use every possibility to support the society.

He emphasized that Europe should also take measures, “better late than never”.

Regarding the changes that citizens see on their bills, he said that already an average household with a consumption of 400 kilowatt hours, would pay 315 euros and will now pay less than 60 euros.

As for whether the consumers of natural gas will be supported, he said we will support them, of course depending on the possibility of the budget and primarily those who are most in need.

To a question if there is a thought to stop illuminating monuments and streetsanswered that the public sector must lead by example in saving energy, however society has already realized the problem and households are already saving.

We have a national plan to reduce electricity in public buildings and limit consumption where we can, he said and added that everything is on the table, to the point where the functioning of society is not at risk.

However, he assured that there is a plan to meet the country’s energy needs in case of emergency.
