According to his statement, the Minister of Migration Policy and Asylum Notis Mitarakis is presenting to the prosecutor of the Supreme Court Isidoros Dogiakos, evidence that shows inconsistencies in the case of the 38 immigrants on an island in Evros. The purpose of today’s visit by the minister to the country’s first class public prosecutor, is to take the Justice and examine all these elements, in order to establish whether criminal acts have been committed by any person who may have been involved in this case.
The Minister of Migration Policy and Asylum passed the door of the Supreme Court at 12 noon and in his statement said:
“We all watched the incident with the 38 migrants who were stranded on an island in Turkish territory according to their statement. As you know, these people were found in Greek territory on August 14th, on August 15th they were found by the Greek police and taken to the KYT police station where they submitted an asylum request. Whether or not they are entitled to stay in Greece or the European Union will be decided by the asylum service. From here on, if offenses have been committed either by themselves but mainly by third parties, it is something that must be examined by justice and that is why I asked today to meet the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court in order to present to him the inconsistencies that have arisen from the examination so far of the case. The most important thing, as I said in Parliament, is that the family, which declared that a five-year-old child had died, which of course moved us all, apparently had declared that it consisted of four children, who are with security in our country”.
Afterwards, Mr. Mitarakis referred to other cases as well, stating, among other things, that “it was also stated that there were people in the group with health issues, this was not confirmed”. As he noted in conclusion: “There are various questions, there is information about the involvement of third parties. I will present all this to the Justice and from then on the matter now concerns the Justice”.
