“Births” in the Rhodes Aquarium by a dogfish – See photo

The dogfish has been placed in a specially designed tank at the hydrological station. It is a harmless fish that belongs to the IUCN Near Threatened species and lives at a depth of 50-60 meters

Two eggs gave birth to one dogfish a few hours after his transfer to the hydrobiological station of Rhodes. The fish was found in a marine area in Faliraki and was taken to the aquarium where it laid its eggs.

Speaking to “Rodiaki”, the biologist, oceanographer Mr. Vivian Louizidou, states that it is the shark of the species Scyliorhinus stellaris, a harmless fish that belongs to the Near Threatened species of the IUCN and lives at a depth of 50-60 meters.

As Ms. Louizidou reports, it lays its eggs once a year, between May and October, and then there is a period of 9 months for them to hatch. This is a special case as most of its relatives give birth to small carnivores and not eggs.

The dogfish has been placed in a specially designed tank at the aquatic station where visitors can see it, while its eggs are in separate tanks and will be monitored by the aquarium team for the next few months
