Three new institutions in schools: Mentor, intra-school coordinator, groups – Their role

by

The general secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alexandros Koptsis, explains.

From the new school year, which starts next week, three new institutions are being introduced in all Primary, Middle and High Schools in the country: Pedagogical Consultants/Mentors, Intra-school Coordinators and Clubs.

Mentors and coordinators are teachers who work outside teaching hours but within working hours. As for the Clubs, they will operate after the end of the daily program or even during the All-Day School, but without “to have a “tutorial” character, i.e. extension, reinforcement or preparation of the lessons of the program timetable”, the general secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alexandros Koptsis, reports to APE-MBE.

Regarding the new institutions, Mr. Koptsis points out that “the goal is primarily to acquire an organizational, multi-level and cooperative culture in schools, to upgrade the school program, to provide better quality education, to modernize our educational system, to eliminate seals and pathogens of the past”.

Educational Consultant/Mentor

The Pedagogical Advisor/Mentor is appointed by the decision of the director and there is one mentor for every 1 to 8 teachers, explains Mr. Koptsis.

His role is intended to “inspire, support newly appointed teachers and substitutes up to 5 years of service and contribute to integration into the school environment”. For example, the mentor “informs and guides the teachers in the didactic part, organizes sample lessons, helps with the correct way of communication with parents and guardians” notes to APE-MPE the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education.

The criteria on the basis of which the Pedagogical Consultant/Mentor is selected are the following with points: Teaching experience, PhD, postgraduate degree, previous tenure as a mentor/consultant, etc., training certification in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the foreign language.

Intramural Coordinator

The Intra-School Coordinators are bodies for coordinating the educational work, Mr. Koptsis describes. They coordinate the curriculum, support teachers in their work by groups of classes or specialties, monitor and supervise the coordination of the curriculum, plan and organize lessons, he explains.

They also “introduce innovative programs, monitor and supervise student evaluation processes, organize teacher meetings to resolve educational and teaching issues.”

For classes 1-10, a class coordinator is provided and as long as there are at least 3 specialty teachers for Primary and 4 for Secondary Education, a specialty coordinator is also provided.

Mr. Koptsis notes that the Mentors can also take on the duties of Intra-School Coordinators.

Groups

The Clubs are formed after a decision of the school director and a recommendation of the Teachers’ Association or a proposal of teachers, the Minister of Education reports to APE-MBE.

Each Group has 6-12 students, while they can also consist of students from different schools.

They have as objects related to sports, arts, dance, visual arts, music, robotics, entrepreneurship, educational objects.

The subject, Mr. Koptsis emphasizes, should respond as much as possible to the interests of the students, “without the teachers mistaking the content and methodological approaches of the taught courses, according to their syllabus”.

The above innovations, underlines Mr. Koptsis, aim “to make the school interesting, creative, pleasant, useful, utilitarian, effective and efficient”.
