Thessaloniki: The White Tower was flooded by bad weather

Pumping water up to and from the most characteristic monument of Thessaloniki was called to carry out a team of the fire brigade during the bad weather in the city.

Indeed, it is typical that the waters reached the height of the door as the employees in their attempt to open the door realized that the entire ground floor has been flooded.

Specifically, the ground floor, but also the basement of the White Tower was filled with water resulting in the firemen being called to respond to them. The waters reached one and a half meters as the area in front of the entrance to the monument was flooded.

The employees of the White Tower stand outside as after the water has been pumped out by the Fire Department, cleaners and other employees are called to clean the water and unclog the wells.

The memorial will remain closed today while it is still expected to be decided whether it will be open to visitors tomorrow.

Speaking to Voria.gr, the employees report that as soon as they arrived at the scene, they saw that the inner side of the monument had been flooded as the water from the outside of the White Tower got inside. “The wall has mud up to a meter and a half and now we are running to clean it”he notes.

The incident puzzled tourists who asked what happened as they were on a guided tour of the surrounding area.

It is recalled that similar images were recorded at the monument in 2018 when the downpour even trapped people and staff inside the White Tower.

However, the streets in front of the monument are rivers and municipal crews are trying to remove leaves and soil.
