Afghanistan: Suicide attack near the Russian embassy – Two injured

by

A Russian diplomat and a Russian security guard were injured when a suicide bomber detonated his belted explosives in Kabul.

Two Russian citizens — a diplomat and a security guard — were injured in the explosion earlier today near Russian Embassy in Kabulthe capital of Afghanistan, the Russian state news agency RIA reported citing a source.

Afghan police earlier announced that one kamikaze detonated the explosives with which he was strapped near the entrance of the Russian embassy in Kabul and added that the attacker was shot dead by armed security guards as he approached the gate.

“The suicide bomber, before reaching his target, was identified and shot by (Taliban) Russian embassy guards…”, told Reuters Maulawi Sabir, the local police chief where the attack took place.

Russia is one of the few countries to have maintained an embassy in Kabul since the Taliban seized power more than a year ago.

Although Moscow does not officially recognize the Taliban government, it is in talks with officials about an agreement to supply gasoline and other goods.
