14 deaths have been recorded in patients with virus infection and CNS manifestations aged over 74 years.

A total of 160 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed in Greece, of which 98 presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 62 had mild manifestations (eg febrile illness) and/or had no CNS manifestations, according to EODY. During the last week, from the previous weekly report to today, 37 new cases were diagnosed/reported. 14 deaths have been recorded in patients with virus infection and CNS manifestations aged over 74 years. An additional death of a patient diagnosed with West Nile virus infection was attributed to other coexisting health problems.

In the period 2022, until 06/09/2022, cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Greece, in settlements in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki and in the Regional Units of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Halkidiki, Serres, Trikala and Larissa . It is considered possible and expected that further cases will be diagnosed in the coming period (and in view of the awareness of health professionals).

The epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely implementation of appropriate integrated mosquito control programs and the adoption of personal protection measures against mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease.
