Fine of 5,000 euros to the minor who kicked a kitten in Rethymno

On Friday afternoon, the girl appeared at the Police Station accompanied by her father and they gave a statement.

An administrative fine of 5,000 euros was imposed on the 15-year-old girl, who appears to kick a kitten with force, while her friends laugh and while her cousin films the horrific incident.

According to information from ERT Chania, the incident happened in the courtyard of the Primary School in Cesme Rethymnon, area where the minor lives with her family.

On Friday afternoon, the girl appeared at the Police Station accompanied by her father and they gave a statement. The Juvenile Prosecutor has been informed about the case, who will take over the case further.

On Thursday afternoon, the profile of the NOIAZOMAI animal welfare group received a message from a citizen informing that in the Cesme area of Rethymno, an incident of abuse of an animal, specifically a cat, took place.

The message was accompanied by a video depicting 2 girls, one of whom approaches the cat under the pretense of petting it and then kicks it with force, throwing it away.

The video was released on Wednesday 07/09/2022 on social media.

According to information from the Association, the minor has repeated abusive behavior towards animals.

Subsequently, members of the Association contacted the Rethymno Police Department, while also informing the Electronic Crime Directorate with the said video as well as with all the evidence they had in their possession until that moment.

It is worth noting that other relevant videos posted on the internet with similar cases of animal abuse are also being sought.

The response of the many animal-loving citizens in Rethymno was touching, after they rushed to the scene of the incident, looking for the stricken kitten, but were unable to locate it.

However, the characterization of the criminal act as a misdemeanor or a felony is open. If the cat is found dead, felony charges will be mandatory, according to the new Law 4830/20,21.

According to the opinion of the animal welfare community, even if the animal is not found, the characterization of the act should be a felony, since its non-finding explicitly leads to the conclusion that the animal has probably succumbed due to the blows.
