Arsenal legend Martin Keown impressed with teenage summer signing Marquinhos’ performance in Thursday night’s 2-1 win over Zurich against the Gunners.

The young Brazilian made his debut for the north London club in the Europa League group stage and scored in just 16 minutes.

In a great collective move, Marquinhos headed in a low cross from Eddie Nketiah with a powerful shot that left the 19-year-old in tears after scoring.

Zürich fought back with a penalty just before half-time, but Nketiah scored shortly after the hour mark, giving Arsenal all three points.

Keon has admired all of Mikel Arteta’s strikers, but Marquinhos stood out so much that he even compared him to former striker and current Bayern Munich star Serge Gnabry.

Speaking about the former BT Sport São Paulo winger, Keown said: We saw a lot of Marquinhos tonight.

Look at Fabio Vieira’s pass, the great ball in the channel. We talked about Nketiah and his movement and some good passes on his weaker legs.

“And the finish! The ball went up before I hit it, a great finish for him.”

He continues: A great future awaits him.

“This is a real opportunity in front of him. Bukayo Saka himself is only a few years older, but with such quality he will take a chance.

He was a bit of a Gnabr-type player. He is short, fat and blast-paced. He looked so elegant.

He wisely chose his moments and put in some crosses. very good quality has continued to produce.

“I think that’s great news. We’ve seen Saka. We’ve seen Smith Rowe start his career in this competition. I think we’re looking for another star.”

His teammate Kevin Campbell agreed, adding: “It was his first goal for Arsenal and it was a great goal.”
