Tomorrow, Monday, the new school year begins for the 1,341,985 Kindergarten, Primary, Middle School and High School students in Greece.

In the morning, the standard consecration will take place, instructions will be given on issues related to the implementation of the timetable and the general operation of the school, the students will receive their books and leave. Classes start as usual from Tuesday.

At the beginning of the academic year and for a period of no more than two weeks, flexible stay hours may be applied to the Kindergarten for infants/pre-infant children attending for the first time, in order to facilitate their adaptation.

This year there will be some changes compared to last year. Also, as far as Covid-19 is concerned, the mandatory use of a mask has been abolished.

However, unvaccinated teachers are required to show a negative diagnostic test.

Changes compared to last year

The extension of the All-Day School hours from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. will be implemented on a pilot basis in 50% of the departments that operate today as full-day, i.e. in almost 5,000 Kindergarten and Primary school departments across the country, for those parents who wish it, as long as complete the sections.

Criteria such as the student population of the school, the number of students already attending full-time and the number of full-time departments in operation were taken into account for the selection of school units.

Educational Groups, Pedagogical Consultants-Mentors, In-School Coordinators and enhanced digital tools (interactive boards, robotics, etc.) are introduced.

The “Friendship” program is launched, which is aimed at education officials, teachers, students and parents with the aim of preventing and dealing with incidents of violence and school bullying.

The 166 New Study Programs, the Skills Workshops, the “Greek Pisa”, the Reinforcement Teaching, the Subject Bank, the evaluation of the school unit and educational project will continue, while the evaluation of the teachers will also begin.

In Kindergartens and Primary Schools, the end of classes will be on June 15, 2023, in High Schools on May 30, while the High School exams will be completed on June 15. In high schools, classes will end on May 19. The internal exams in the 3rd Lyceum will be held from May 22 to 30 and the exams in the 1st and 2nd Lyceum from May 22 to June 15.

The draw for Experimentals is scheduled for April 28, 2023 and the Standards exam for April 29.

Finally, EPAL Standards, 24 will operate for the first time throughout the country.

Measures against Covid-19

The use of a protective mask is optional for students in all classes, teachers and other staff, as well as for visitors to school units.

Teachers and members of the EEP-EBP, as well as administrative and other staff, who are not fully vaccinated or who are ill, are required to undergo laboratory diagnostic testing with rapid-test or PCR in private diagnostic laboratories, in private clinics, in pharmacies or in private doctor, at their own expense.

The tests are carried out once per school week, before the Tuesday until forty-eight hours before attendance at the school unit.

What if the students show symptoms of Covid 19

If a student exhibits symptoms of coronavirus outside of school, he/she remains at home and the school unit is notified under the responsibility of the parents/guardians.

If the student is in the school unit, the following takes place on behalf of the school unit’s Covid-19 officer:

  • Communication with the family to pick up the student.
  • Isolation of the student in a predetermined well-ventilated area, with supervision, away from other children and application of a simple surgical mask.
  • Application of hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene by the student and the person(s) taking care of him/her.
  • Use of personal protective equipment by staff (mask, gloves, and in case of risk of ejection of biological fluids or respiratory secretions – waterproof apron and eye protection with glasses or face shield).
  • Thorough cleaning of the area and application of disinfectant to surfaces after the student’s departure using personal protective equipment.
  • A medical evaluation is carried out at the initiative of the parents/guardians and in collaboration with them.

Returning sick people to school

The student or adult may return to school after five days of isolation if there are no symptoms or the symptoms improve after five days with a complete resolution of the fever for a 24-hour period without the use of antipyretics. Day “0” (zero) is considered the day of receipt of the positive laboratory diagnosis.
