Kostas Kazakos was not only a gifted actor, director and translator of plays. He was a generous personality, with penetrating reflection and deep awareness of the social mission of art to humanize man, reports the KKE.
It is with deep sadness and emotion that we say goodbye to one of the greats of the theater, our beloved, our precious companion in the small and the big, in the easy and the difficult, in the joys and bitterness of life and struggle, Kosta Kazako” she says in a statement the Central Committee of the KKE and then emphasizes:
“Kostas Kazakos was not only a gifted actor, director and translator of plays. He was a generous personality, with penetrating reflection and a deep awareness of the social mission of art to humanize man. The great things he achieved in the field of art were not simply due to the gifts that nature gave him, the strong voice, the haughty masculine form, the imposing figure, but above all to the mental and spiritual virtues, which were sculpted and matured painstakingly and with sacrifices from his youthful years in the biowrestling furnace and through his passion for education and spiritual cultivation.
His father’s fighting heritage and personal experiences placed him early on on the side of the wronged, on the side of “the section of the people that bears the greatest social burden”, as he said referring to the working class and its role in the cause of social liberation.
The choice of the theatrical path was conscious, inextricably linked with the course of his class and ideological awareness. From his first theatrical appearance after graduating from the drama school of the Charles Kuhn Theater of Art, in Bertolt Brecht’s play “The Chalk Circle”, but also throughout his journey on stage and cinema, Kostas Kazakos has had an emblematic career, with leading roles in works by great authors, managing to “tame” in a pure and therefore essentially popular way, theatrical texts – classical and modern dramaturgy – that address the most visceral emotions and the highest thoughts of humanity . As a troupe leader and director, he carefully selected the works he staged, with the criteria of being socially and historically useful, such as the show – a symbol of the anti-dictatorship struggle “Our Big Circus”.
In 2023, he would complete 70 years of contribution to the theater. Undaunted to the end he served the dramatic art with a faith and passion founded on a deep appreciation of its power, in his view that the theater “provides education and is the most popular, topical, immediately comprehensible and living art”, in his belief that ” theater certainly cannot change the world, but it can change people” as he used to say.
Faithful to the creative and educational role of progressive art and having confidence in the inexhaustible potential of the working people, Kostas Kazakos dedicated his whole life, thought, emotion and talent to helping us “realize our power, to raise our morale and decisively decapitate the anthropomorphic monster that is destroying our lives”.
He always felt art as a struggle for elevation, progress, development that never stops and considered the artist’s fighting attitude to life, which he followed firmly and unwaveringly until the end. Responding to the historical necessity of our time, Kostas Kazakos allied himself for decades, on the front line, with the KKE, even from the position of his deputy, always present in all the struggles of the working-class and anti-imperialist movement.
His political action was a harmonious coexistence of life and artistic practice. His ideology defined his life and this came out effortlessly in his work. We cannot distinguish Kostas Kazakos’ political action from his artistic activity. First of all, with his work he served his advanced social ideals and their class-bearer and then, with his active presence in all the great political battles, he confirmed what he meant by his work.
Comrade Kostas will remain in our hearts, he will remain in the hearts of the whole world of the layman, this “enemy of the people”, whom he loved so much and was so similar to the simplicity, warmth and popularism of his great soul. He will not be forgotten, because he was a protagonist full of passion and power, not just on stage, on the sets, on the platforms of demonstrations, but ultimately in History. He “longed for a country” where the people would cease to “wait in vain for time”. And if the few do not forgive him, it is a confirmation that he did his duty as an artist and as a man, it is a reward of his life. The days when the people “will no longer refuse to see their road closed”, the days they longed for, sooner or later, will come. All those who continue his life, fighting for a higher civilization in a higher social organization, will see to it.
Our deepest condolences to his beloved partner Jenny, his children, grandchildren and all his loved ones.”.
Pafilis emotion in the Parliament
The parliamentary representative of the Communist Party of Greece, Thanasis Pafilis, spoke in Parliament, on the sidelines of the news of the death of Kostas Kazakos, about natural virtues that had been sculpted in the cauldron of biowrestling.
“Kazakos chose the right side of history very early on the side of the producers of wealth. On the side of the wronged. His political activity is known throughout his years. He was twice elected as a member of the KKE, we say goodbye to him with a verse: ” the days you longed for will come” and we will take care of it”. he said.
