A true Brazilian institution, cachaça has a day of its own in the national calendar: its date is celebrated this Tuesday, September 13th. Created more than 500 years ago in a sugar mill on the country’s coast, sugarcane brandy is considered the first distilled beverage in Latin America.
Based on another national classic — the caipirinha, of course — and many other recipes, the drink inspired a special program at the Preto Cozinha restaurant, in Pinheiros, west of São Paulo, for the month of September.
Dedicated to Brazilian flavors, especially those from Bahia, the house celebrates the date with a schedule of classes on the subject with experts, guest bartenders and, of course, a drinks menu that celebrates cachaça. The person who signs the letter and the agenda is Christopher Carijó, head of the restaurant’s bar and former director of the Confraria Paulista da Cachaça. The activities are open to the public and registration is not required.
Eight cocktails were created for the themed menu. This is the case of Galo Preto, made with cachaça infused with coconut oil, Cynar, red vermouth and a tapioca beiju with coconut butter flavored with orange and hot pepper, and Goiabinha Sour, which also has Sicilian lemon, guava paste, pasteurized egg white and dehydrated guava. Each of them costs R$ 44.
During the month of September, the address also suggests a harmonized menu with three snacks and three cachaças that costs R$ 127 and serves two people.
The agenda dedicated to the drink foresees meetings on Monday and Wednesday nights until the end of the month. This Wednesday (14), for example, the restaurant welcomes David Barreiro (Yaguara ambassador) and Alysson Antenor (Jägermeister ambassador) to prepare drinks from 8 pm.
Carijó also mobilized other addresses in the capital to offer drinks with the distillate in September. Among them are houses such as Sky Hall, Cão Véio, Pirajá and Flora Bar.
