Dr Kontos Trial: Today the Prosecutor’s summons for the fake doctor

One of the most sensational cases that have ever reached the Greek Judiciary, with the protagonist of the 50-year-old appearing as “Dr. Kondo”, accused of twelve murders and fourteen attempted murders of seriously ill patients who trusted his paradoxical “healing” methods, enters today at the behest of the District Attorney, the final phase before the verdict of the judges.

The judges of the Joint Jury Court and the actors of the trial will hear the judgment of the Prosecutor General in what is included in the case file and in what emerged after about ten months of hearing, about the action of “Doctor Kontos”, who is flanked in the dock by others 16 defendants. Action which, according to the case file, resulted in the loss of life of twelve people, including two children, and in the rapid and in many cases painful deterioration of the health of 14 other patients.

With his proposal, which is expected to last for a long time, the prosecutor will accept or reject what is attributed to the main accused but also to his 16 co-accused in the case, which the prosecutor himself, at the start of the trial last November, had characterized “unprecedented in Greek annals”.

The 50-year-old is said to have, from 2010 until his arrest in 2019 and without the slightest connection to medicine, pretended to be the leading Oncology doctor “Dr. Kontos” who claimed to have virtually defeated cancer and other serious ailments, such as the case of a patient with multiple sclerosis, giving his victims, for exorbitant fees, herbs and special diets as sophisticated treatments.

After what was testified by the victims of “Doctor Kontos”, who finally declared to the judicial authorities an “experienced botanist”, after reading important documents, forensic reports, etc., but also what the main accused and his co-accused claimed by apologizing, the head prosecutor of the Joint Jury will declare with his announcement whether his judgment is in favor of the guilt or not of the 50-year-old and those allegedly involved in the case.

In the voluminous case file it is stated that “Doctor Kontos” had the assistance of his co-accused, doctors, executives of a certain clinic, a nun and others, who allegedly reinforced in patients the belief that the “doctor” was of high scientific prestige.

The protagonist of the case himself, apologizing in court last July, denied any deception or attempt to deceive the people who trusted him, claiming that he never told them that they would be cured. “Doctor Kontos” citing mainly issues of religious belief, told the judges that he selflessly wanted, due to his great knowledge in botany, to help people “whom conventional medicine could not offer them anything else”. He even hinted that in the end he himself had little involvement in the course of his victims, since “God decides who will live and who will die”. As for the title of “Doctor of Oncology” he said that it was attributed to him because of his association with a Greek-American doctor and that he himself was simply wrong not to deny this rumor that had spread, especially in a certain monastery where many of his victims identified him.

In what appeared, however, by the defendant as a simple failure to clarify, that he is not “Dr. Kontos”, it was the prosecutor who pointed out to him that the matter does not only concern an omission of denial but, on the contrary, the projection of this capacity. “You had a linkedin page, medical ID that you showed to witnesses and various behaviors that indirectly indicate this. You sent a message “I’m in the surgery”, you said that you had contacts with Mrs. Marianna Vardinogiannis and others, that you treated the President of the Republic of Cyprus, that you treated Schumacher” the prosecutor’s official had emphasized to him.

Last December, “Doctor Kontos” completed 18 months of pre-trial detention for the case being tried, however he remains in prison as a new pre-trial detention warrant was issued against him in the same month, with a validity of 12 months, for the charge of money laundering.
