“We made a significant offer (to Russia) a few months ago,” said White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.

US President Joe Biden will meet at the White House tomorrow, Friday, with the families of two Americans detained in Russia, basketball player Brittney Greiner and former Marine Paul Whelan, the White House announced.

“We made a significant offer (to Russia) a few months ago,” said White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.

“The president wants to make sure that the families understand that they are at the top of his concerns,” he added, clarifying that Joe Biden will receive Britney Greiner’s wife and Paul Whelan’s sister.

“I wish I could tell you today that Britney and Paul are coming home. Unfortunately, we’re not there,” said Karin Jean-Pierre.

The basketball player was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Russian court for cannabis smuggling.

Her case took on a geopolitical dimension in the context of the crisis between Moscow and Washington in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This diplomatic row has once again turned the spotlight on Paul Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence in a Russian prison for “espionage”.
