In the holy church of Agios Georgios, her relatives, friends and compatriots as well as people from the political and artistic world said their last goodbye to the emblematic Greek woman with international recognition, in a climate of deep emotion.
The funeral service ended with the people singing “Overcome stratego”, the hymn that Irini Papa had sung in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, but also “Oh my sweet ear”: “They offer you a burial hymn, Irini”.
Present at the funeral were the Minister of Culture Lina Mendonis, her very good friend Ilias Psinakis, her nieces, among them Manousos Manousakis and the actor Ayantas Manthopoulos and the journalist and politician Giorgos Lianis.
Irini Pappa was born on September 3, 1926 in Chiliomodi as Irini Lelekou and spent her last years there, facing health problems, away from the public eye.
“I want to always remember that I am from Chiliomodi” she said herself in an interview with ERT.
Her family has requested that instead of wreaths, the money be allocated to the “Theotokos” foundation for the support of children with special needs, or to the “Actor’s House”.
