Aerial footage shows dozens of pilot whales lying along a vast beach.
About 230 pilot whales have been spotted stranded off the west coast of Tasmania, Australia, with officials saying sadly only half appear to be still alive.
“A group of about 230 cetaceans were stranded near Makari Harbour,” Tasmania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Environment said. “It looks like about half the animals are alive,” he added.
Images taken from the air show a sad situation: dozens of whales lie along a vast beach while some are washed away by the waves.

Almost two years ago in the same area there was a similar event, when almost 500 pilot whales were stranded, of which only about 100 survived.
The reasons for these incidents are not known.
Scientists estimate that it may be due to the fact that groups of cetaceans escape after foraging too close to shore.
Besides, pilot whales are very social animals and often follow members of their group who wander and are thus in danger.
