The Special Court ruled that there is no substantial substantial public interest
The Special Court on the responsibility of ministers rejected, by a majority (8 against 5), despite the prosecutor’s proposal to the contrary, the request of the defendants’ lawyers Dimitris Papagelopoulou and Elenis Toulupakis for continuous television coverage of the trial.
In particular, out of the 13 members of the Special Court, five abstained: Vassiliki Iliopoulou (president of the Special Court), Roxani Giannoulatou, Panagiotis Tsoukas, Varvara Raftopoulou and Vasilios Aravantinos.
The Special Court held that there was no significant substantial public interest to warrant litigation.
Previously, the district attorney Olga Smyrli stated that she consents to the trial being fully covered, as reasons of public interest also contribute. Mrs. Smyrli pointed out that she finds no reason not to consent to the television coverage, as the case in question has occupied the political and judicial world for a long time. Defense attorneys welcomed the prosecutor’s proposal, and the court went into conference to rule on the motion, which was ultimately denied.
Court adjourned until next Thursday, September 29, 2022.
