44-year-old’s murder trial: I learned about his death on the radio, his mother testified

With the testimony of the elderly mother of the unfortunate 44-year-old, who was shot dead by the robber, whom she tried to disarm during the struggle, the trial before the Mixed Jury of Thessaloniki for the murderous robbery of last November, in a convenience store, began on Gr. Lambraki street.

A 28-year-old and a 36-year-old are sitting in the defendant’s dock, the first as a perpetrator of manslaughter, robbery, illegal carrying of weapons and use of weapons, while the second as an accomplice in the robbery and additionally for possession of drugs.

In an atmosphere of intense emotional charge, the mother of the deceased Marios stated in her testimony that she was informed of her son’s death on the radio, as she was in a taxi on the way to the hospital where the victim had been treated with severe brain injuries.

“He was my only son, my support. Ever since I lost my husband he has vowed to be by my side. He worked the night shift because he said the pay was better,” said the witness, among other things.

The defendants previously denied the charges against them.

“I didn’t intend to kill and I didn’t know the gun had cartridges,” said the 28-year-old, originally from Albania.

He accepted only the act of robbery, stressing that he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

His 36-year-old co-accused (a citizen), who was allegedly holding “chilis”, pleaded not guilty, saying that he did not participate in the robbery, nor did he provide cover.

The murderous robbery took place in the early hours of the morning November 6, 2021 and was captured frame by frame by security cameras inside and around the convenience store.

The victim was shot on contact and ended up a few hours later at the AHEPA hospital.

According to the summons, after committing his act, the 28-year-old is seen running in an adjacent street, meeting his alleged accomplice, whom he informed about the unfavorable turn the robbery had taken, and then threw away both the weapon and the clothes he was wearing .

By the same will, later the two defendants – who were friendly and allegedly drug users – met, with the first (a foreigner) handing over to his co-accused a share of the robbery, which, according to the owner of the business, amounted to 420 euros.

The trial is ongoing and continues with the witness-police procedure.
