Suspicion of sabotage on the Nord Stream pipelines – Damage in three places within 24 hours

by

Nord Stream AG is talking about an unprecedented disaster. The time required to restore the infrastructure is unknown.

Three submarine lines of the gas pipeline system Nord Stream in the Baltic suffered “unprecedented” damage in one day, Nord Stream AG, the company that manages the network, announced today, amid suspicions of sabotage.

The announcement came after Swedish shipping authorities issued a warning about two leaks on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, shortly after a leak on the neighboring Nord Stream 2 pipeline caused Denmark to ban navigation within a five-nautical-mile radius.

Nord Stream AG announced that it is impossible to estimate when the possibility of operating the gas pipeline system will be restored.

“The disaster that happened on the same day simultaneously in three lines of the submarine pipelines of the Nord Stream system is unprecedented. It is not yet possible to calculate the time it will take to restore the gas transmission infrastructure”she said in her comments to reporters.

Meanwhile, although the German authorities have so far made no comment, according to a source in the German government, cited by the German newspaper Taggesspiegel, “everything indicates that this is not a coincidence.”

“We cannot imagine a scenario that does not involve a targeted attack,” the source stressed.

Nord Stream 1, which consists of two parallel lines capable of transporting 27.5 billion cubic meters per year each, began supplying gas directly from Russia to Germany in 2011.

Flows through the pipeline, which had been operating since July at just 20% of capacity, stopped at the end of August and did not resume after maintenance work.

Russia claims that faulty equipment at an important compressor station and Western sanctions due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are responsible for the pipeline’s failure.

Nord Stream 2, which is a parallel to Nord Stream 1, was built in September 2021 but never launched as Germany refused to certify it. The program was completely halted just days before Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine on February 24.
