The defendants had reached the point of checking the persons entering the old student residences of the Polytechnic University, asking for IDs, while they had threatened a student with a gun.
In dismantling of three gangs which since 2019 had its seat and base its student residences in Polytechnic University in Zografou the police authorities proceeded yesterday after an operation.
All in all they did 32 arrests – including the leading executives – while 52 people are included in the case file that was formed.
During yesterday’s operation, attempts were made to arrest the 30-year-old marked Albanian, a leading member of the gangs, who, realizing his imminent arrest, attacked a police officer with a sharp object, who, in her attempt to avoid the attack, used her official armament, injuring him.
Nine of the defendants and occasionally twelve of their accomplices lived permanently in the residences, while the three gangs committed at least 29 robberies and thefts, as well as numerous drug trafficking transactions. At the same time, they had also committed robberies against students.
Gangs and their activities in detail
– For the first criminal group, were arrested 9 members and a case file was opened against them for the creation of a criminal organization and for – as the case may be – violations of the laws on drugs, weapons and money laundering.
The members of this particular group are involved in 80 cases of drug trafficking, while the vast majority of those arrested have engaged the authorities in cases of fan violence, robberies, weapons and drugs.
In the context of the investigations carried out, in houses, shops and storage areas in total, the following were found and confiscated:
• 4 cars,
• 2 pistols,
• 4 magazines,
• 67 cartridges of various calibers,
• folding metal gloves and knives,
• complete equipment from 2 equipped laboratories for the production of cannabis of hydroponic origin,
• 2,770.28 grams of raw cannabis,
• 218.77 grams of processed hemp (chocolate),
• 42.27 grams of cocaine,
• 7,515 euros and
• equipment for processing – preparation of processed hemp (press).
– For the second criminal group – and the main one of Polytechnic University – were arrested 24 members of the gang, and were charged with gang-robbery and aggravated theft, as well as dangerous bodily harm and a drug offence.
As it emerged from the investigation, the members of this particular gang had been active for more than a year and were using the student residences of the Polytechnic University in the area of Zografou, Attica as starting point for the commission of robberies as well as for planning them, as a place to store stolen goods, weapons, narcotics, as a place for distribution and trafficking of drugs, as a parking place for the vehicles used for illegal activities. In addition to the starting point, the Polytechnioupoli was also the escape areaas they fled there to avoid arrest.
The particular gang followed the following methodology of action:
• They committed the armed robberies having covered their features with full face masks and gloves, in order to avoid their identification by the authorities.
• They had weapons such as firearms and knives, which they even displayed on social media as a show of force, while they were ready to use them in a possible confrontation.
• They used telephone devices registered in the names of non-existent foreigners (straw men).
• They used to communicate with each other “business” telephone devices ( GHOST NUMBERS ) with many telephone connections, as well as online applications for communication and exchange of encrypted messages.
• They had developed control system for the entry of people into the Campus areainstalling at the entry pointsarmed gang memberswhich carried out informal face control and checking people unknown or suspicious to them without hesitating to offer their weapons during the control.
From the preliminary investigation, 27 cases of robberies and 2 thefts committed in areas near the Polytechnic University were discovered.
During the searches carried out both in the area of the student residences and in the houses, the following were found and confiscated:
• Carbine,
• pistol-air gun,
• folding glop and folding knife,
• iron fist-knife,
• iron fist,
• 20 cartridges,
• bulletproof,
• high accuracy weight scale,
• nylon packaging containing an unknown narcotic substance,
• balaclava and
• two graters and gloves.
– Regarding the action of the third gang a case was filed against him 18 people for a gang that commits serial and consecutive robberies and for – as the case may be – violation of the arms legislation and supporting a criminal, while the case file also includes 5 unknown perpetrators whose details could not be identified.
3 cases of robberies and 28 cases of drug trafficking within university premises were investigated, while their involvement in cases of trafficking in illegal weapons and ammunition was identified.
As it emerged from the investigation, the members of the gang committed armed robberies and trafficked narcotics, while the leading members of the gangs recruited other members to protect and support the foreigner, against whom the warrants were pending.
