Opinion – Cozinha Bruta: Lunchbox scam is stealing food from the miserable and hungry

by

We are too used to scams, tales, schemes, swindles and swindles. There are so many crooks, there are so many suckers that we play the game of deception as if it were normal. Is life.

In the Mercadão de São Paulo alone, much has been said recently about the fruit scam (traders pushing fruit at extortionate prices) and the mortadella scam (other traders selling brand X and delivering Y, of inferior quality).

In Rio de Janeiro, the other day, a man was arrested for carrying out a blow with beans. He didn’t promise magic beans like the one in João’s fable, he just dyed them green. Thus, he multiplied the value of cowpea by making it pass for green cowpea – as you can see, there are many nuances in the choice of ingredients for baião-de-two.

The bean scam is an anecdote, it’s almost folklore compared to the scheme set up in Blumenau (SC) to earn money by donating lunch boxes that didn’t exist. The roll gained, on social networks, the nickname of marmitagate.

It’s a very complicated story, which you can understand in detail in this F5 report and in some Twitter threads, like this. I’ll try to do a quick summary.

A certain Eduarda Poleza would have created a social project called Feeding Necessidades, in which she collected money for Pix to, in theory, distribute meals to people in situations of food insecurity.

To draw attention, this Duda came to invent a partner in the project, create a virtual profile for the imaginary friend and describe, in this profile, a situation in which the girl (who does not exist) was raped at a party. At the end of the lurid story, a request for donations for the lunchboxes.

The rocambolesque move raised the suspicions of those who, until then, saw Duda Poleza’s initiative as in good faith. It turned out that the photos of the lunchboxes – which always showed the production of food, never the distribution of donations – were taken at Duda’s father’s restaurant, which sells meals to workers.

Scheme discovered, the Civil Police of Santa Catarina began to investigate Duda and his possible accomplices.

It is not known how much money was raised from the lunchboxes that were never delivered. The volume of the tunga doesn’t matter, as a matter of fact. The biggest problem is the nature of the fraud.

Making money with fake donations is diverting money that would go to people in need. It is the height of a lack of sense of community. It’s stealing from the poor.

Whoever does this doesn’t care about anyone, they don’t give a damn about the collective well-being.

It is equivalent, in terms of immorality, to people who pretended to be poor to receive emergency aid in the pandemic – something that did, for example, the barbecue of the R$ 1,799 steak roasted for President Bolsonaro.
