Armenia-Azerbaijan: Three Armenians killed in new hostilities on the border

“Azerbaijani forces launched an attack with mortars and large-caliber weapons on the eastern part of our border,” the Armenian Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding that the attack “resulted in three deaths on the Armenian side.”

Three Armenians lost their lives in new hostilities that broke out today on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, the Armenian Ministry of Defense announced.

“Azerbaijani forces launched an attack with mortars and large-caliber weapons on the eastern part of our border,” the Armenian Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding that the attack “resulted in three deaths on the Armenian side.”

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a tweet that the three Armenians were killed “in an attack on Armenia’s independence, sovereignty and democracy”. “The withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops and the deployment of an international observer force in the Azerbaijani-occupied territories of Armenia and the border areas is an absolute necessity,” he stressed.

Deadly clashes, with an estimated 300 deaths, broke out on September 13 on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. The two countries blame each other for hostilities that have been the worst since the 2020 war.

Although in recent days the crisis seemed to be easing, the situation on the border of the two former Soviet republics remains tense.

The two countries have been in conflict for several decades over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is historically populated by Armenians but was part of Azerbaijan during the Soviet era. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, they were involved in two wars, in the early 1990s (over 30,000 dead) and in 2020 (6,500 dead). However, the recent flare-up was not centered on Nagorno-Karabakh but parts of Armenian territory, Yerevan complains.
