Today the two defendants (the case file also includes a third person who is wanted) apologized to the Thessaloniki investigator.
The road to prison was taken by the two Bulgarians who were arrested and accused of rigging four ATMs, three in Thessaloniki and one in Giannitsa, stealing the data of hundreds of bank cards.
Only in the cases of the ATMs in Thessaloniki – as announced by the police – the data of at least 665 debit and credit cards were stolen, which were promptly canceled by the bank branches, with the avoided loss exceeding 665,000 euros.
According to the case file, the perpetrators seem to have placed mechanisms in the card-receptor of the ATMs, as well as a plastic cover to which a microcircuit and a camera had been properly adapted and pasted on the upper plastic casing of the machines to record the secret PIN code when typing by the cardholder. This is a method internationally called “Skimming”.
The mechanisms were installed between 16 and 18 September but were noticed and the relevant authorities immediately proceeded to cancel the bank cards, before clone cards were created and money was withdrawn from bank accounts.
They denied the charges
Today the two accused foreigners (the case file also includes a third person who is wanted) apologized to the Thessaloniki investigator.
They were charged with forming a criminal organization and computer fraud, which they denied. According to information, they disputed that these are the persons who trapped the disputed ATMs and that they were not even found at the specific points.
But they did not convince the prosecutor and the investigator who judged them to be temporary prisoners.
